The Acetate Buffer is commonly used to maintain pH within 3.6 and 5.6, making it ideal for processes requiring a stable environment at this pH. It is effective in applications including the purification and precipitation of nucleic acids, protein crystallization, and preparing staining solution for gels after protein gel electrophoresis. At a 3M concentration, this buffer has a strong buffering capacity due to an abundance of acetic acid to acetate ions.
